The night before my wedding, I found my best friend in bed with my fiancé.

My heart still aches when I think about that night, even now.

Everything was supposed to be perfect, a dream I’d spent my whole life building.

Michael and I had been together for five years, and he was my world.

Sarah, my best friend since kindergarten, was supposed to be my maid of honor.

We had picked out her dress together, giggling like schoolgirls.

The wedding was tomorrow, a fairytale day planned down to the last rose petal.

I had gone back to my childhood home for one last night as a "single" woman.

But I realized I’d left my emergency comfort kit at Michael’s apartment.

It had my favorite stress-relief face mask and a cheesy rom-com DVD.

I knew he’d be out with his groomsmen for his bachelor party.

So, I grabbed my spare key, thinking I’d be in and out in minutes.

The apartment was eerily quiet when I let myself in, which was unusual.

The night before my wedding, I found my best friend in bed with my fiancé.

A strange scent, not Michael's cologne, hung heavy in the air.

A woman’s scarf, a delicate silk one, lay draped over the living room sofa.

My stomach lurched, a cold dread seeping into my bones.

I tried to rationalize it, maybe Sarah had dropped it earlier when she helped with decorations.

But the scarf was an unfamiliar shade of emerald green.

My steps became heavy, each one an agonizing drumbeat against the silence.

I saw a sliver of light beneath the bedroom door.

My hand trembled as I pushed the door open just a crack.

What I saw next punched the air right out of my lungs.

There, in our bed, was Michael.

And beside him, curled up intimately, was Sarah.

The emerald green scarf was tangled in her hair.

They were both asleep, oblivious to the nightmare unfolding before me.

A choked sob escaped my lips, but it felt silent in my own ears.

My entire world splintered into a million irreparable pieces.

My fiancé, the man I was going to marry in less than 24 hours.

My best friend, the sister I never had, my confidante.

Betrayal doesn't just cut; it eviscerates you from the inside out.

I stumbled back, my hands flying to my mouth to stifle a scream.

The floor seemed to tilt beneath my feet, threatening to swallow me whole.

How could they? How long? The questions hammered at my skull.

Their faces, so peaceful in their deceit, burned into my memory.

I felt a wave of nausea so powerful I thought I might collapse.

My vision blurred through hot, stinging tears.

I wanted to wake them, to unleash a fury that could shake the foundations of the building.
