Walking into my own kitchen, I saw my fiancé proposing to another woman.

It still feels like yesterday, the way the world just… stopped.

I remember the warmth of the sun on my face as I walked home that Tuesday afternoon.

It was supposed to be a normal day, just like any other.

Mark and I had been together for five years, engaged for one.

Our wedding was set for next spring, the invitations already designed.

We’d spent the last few months picking out caterers, arguing over floral arrangements, dreaming about our future.

He was my rock, my best friend, the person I shared every single secret with.

I trusted him with everything, my whole life was built around him.

We’d even just closed on our first house together, a charming little place with a big kitchen I adored.

That day, I’d left work early, a surprise for Mark.

I wanted to cook him his favorite lasagna, maybe open a bottle of wine, just a quiet evening together.

The kind of ordinary moments that made up our extraordinary life.

I fumbled with my keys at the front door, a silly smile on my face thinking about his reaction.

The house was quiet, too quiet.

Walking into my own kitchen, I saw my fiancé proposing to another woman.

Usually, I’d hear his music, or the TV, or him puttering around.

A tiny prickle of unease started in my stomach.

"Mark?" I called out, my voice echoing slightly in the empty living room.

No answer.

I walked through the entryway, dropping my bag on the hall table.

Then I heard it.

A muffled laugh, light and unfamiliar, coming from the kitchen.

And then Mark’s voice, low and intimate.

My heart started to pound, a frantic drum against my ribs.

Confusion mixed with a strange, cold dread.

Who was here?

He hadn’t mentioned anyone coming over.

My feet felt heavy, each step a monumental effort as I moved towards the kitchen archway.

I paused, just outside the threshold, trying to make sense of the hushed tones.

Then I took a breath, pushed through the last bit of hesitation, and stepped into the room.

The world tilted on its axis.

Mark was there, in the middle of our kitchen.

He was on one knee.

He was holding a small, velvet ring box, open, revealing a glittering diamond.

And he wasn’t looking at me.

His gaze was fixed on a woman I’d never seen before, a blonde with wide, teary eyes and a radiant smile.

She was extending her hand towards him, her fingers trembling slightly.

The words left his lips, clear and resonant, even as my ears screamed with static.

"Will you marry me?"

The air left my lungs in a ragged gasp.

It was like being struck by lightning, an electric current of pure shock and pain ripping through me.

My vision blurred at the edges, the vibrant colors of our kitchen turning dull and gray.
